When we goLate winter — March
TerrainLava fields, glacier edges, fjords

(01)The place

Black-sand mornings, geothermal afternoons, and a sky that won’t sit still after dark.

We go in March, when the Ring Road empties and the light comes back in long, low sheets. The days are short enough to keep you hungry and long enough to walk somewhere nobody else has been that week.

Our base is a farmhouse an hour off the main road, run by a family that has bred horses there for four generations. We cook together most nights. On clear ones, Sigrún knocks on the doors when the aurora starts.

(02)Three moments

What you’ll still be talking about.

01

A hot river at dusk

A ninety-minute walk up a steaming valley to a river warm enough to lie in while the snow falls.

02

The glacier, on foot

Crampons, a local guide, and the strange blue inside an ice cave that changes shape every winter.

03

Fjord-side bread

Rye baked in the ground by geothermal heat for twenty-four hours, eaten with smoked trout and butter.
